What You Need to Know About FFL Transfers in Burleson, TX

If you've ever bought a firearm online or from an out-of-state dealer, you've probably heard the term FFL transfer. It's a required step in the process — and at The Gun Shop in Burleson, Texas, we make it as fast and painless as possible for $20 per transfer.

Here's everything you need to know.

What Is an FFL Transfer?

Federal law requires that any firearm purchased from a licensed dealer — including online retailers — must be shipped to a federally licensed firearms dealer (FFL) in the buyer's state. That dealer then processes the transfer to you after completing the required paperwork and background check.

The Gun Shop is a licensed FFL dealer in Burleson, TX, authorized to receive and transfer firearms on your behalf.

How the Process Works

  1. Buy your firearm from any online retailer, auction, or out-of-state dealer.
  2. Download our FFL from our FFL Transfers page and send it to the seller.
  3. The seller ships the firearm directly to our store.
  4. We contact you when it arrives and is logged into our system.
  5. Come in, complete your ATF Form 4473, and pass your NICS background check.
  6. Pay the $20 fee and take your firearm home. Simple.

What to Bring

When you come in to complete your transfer, bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Your address on the ID must match your current address — if it doesn't, bring a supporting document like a utility bill or bank statement showing your current address.

Does My LTC Exempt Me From the Background Check?

No. A Texas License to Carry (LTC) does not exempt you from completing the ATF Form 4473 or the NICS background check for a transfer. This is a federal requirement that applies to all FFL transfers regardless of state carry permits.

How Long Does It Take?

Most NICS background checks come back within minutes. The entire in-store process typically takes 20–30 minutes. Occasionally a check is delayed — in that case, federal law allows us to complete the transfer after 3 business days if no denial has been received.

Can I Have a Private Sale Shipped Here?

Yes, but with an important caveat: private sellers cannot ship directly to you or to us — they must first transfer the firearm to a licensed FFL dealer in their state, who then ships it to us. This FFL-to-FFL process is required for all interstate private transfers.
